NEWS RELEASEJuly 27, 2009 Recent IUPUI Graduate Receives USAC Kara Hendrick Spirit Award
(INDIANAPOLIS) Lyn St. James and the Women in the Winner’s Circle Foundation hosted an awards ceremony on July 23, to celebrate the diversity and successes of women in motorsports at the 7th Annual Women in the Winner’s Circle Luncheon. At the ceremony Lynsey Tilton, a recent graduate of IUPUI’s School of Engineering and Technology, was presented with the USAC Kara Hendrick Spirit Award. “My dad was actually at the track when Kara Hendrick passed away. She died at my age and at my home track at only twenty-two years old. It means a lot to me to receive this award. I feel honored and inspired. Kara is a woman driver that is a historic figure and an inspiration to many,” said Tilton. Tilton comes from a racing family as her father, Roger, raced sprint cars for many years, and her brothers raced as well. When Tilton was just a week old she attended her first race as her family took her to a motorcycle track to watch her brothers race. She began racing at the age of four, and has raced go-karts, midgets, sprint cars and more, and has seen much success. Tilton’s family moved to Indiana from San Diego, California when she was eighteen years old so she could race and go to school at IUPUI. At IUPUI, Tilton was a Top 100 student and served as the president of the motorsports club. She helped to grow the motorsports program as she worked hard to represent the program well and aided in recruiting students. Tilton enjoyed seeing IUPUI’s motorsports program grow to offer the first motorsports engineering degree and attract new students from all over the country. In May 2009, Tilton graduated from IUPUI with a degree in mechanical engineering. As an IUPUI alum, Tilton is now working as a CAD/design engineer at Laibe Corporation in Indianapolis and continues to have a racing career. Tilton has been through Lyn St. James’ Women in the Winner’s Circle Driver Development Program twice, at the age of 13 and 17, and appreciates the physical and mental aspects of the training, as well as the media training she received. “I’m so thankful for all of those who have supported me in my racing career and in life. From the Women in the Winner’s Circle Foundation, to the faculty, staff and students at IUPUI, to my parents, I couldn’t be more grateful for all that they have done for me,” said Tilton. The annual Women in the Winner’s Circle Luncheon, which began in 2003, is the Foundation’s major fundraiser as well as celebrating the success of women in racing, helping them build strong ties with each other and the motorsports community. Proceeds from the luncheon benefitted education and training programs for aspiring women drivers and engineers. To learn more about Lynsey Tilton, please visit http://www.lynseytiltonracing.com/.
